Chevron Traffic Management has been awarded a silver Green Apple Environmental Award for using digital technology to reduce carbon emissions.

The Green Apple Environment Awards aim to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. They are an official feeder scheme into the European Business Awards for the Environment and the Green World Awards.

As part of their overall commitment to deliver carbon reduction solutions to the industry, Chevron TM strive to look beyond traditional methods and actively seek new innovations to reduce their impact on the environment. Chevron TM trialled Intellitag, a unique and new innovative digital solution from HRS that aims to remove the requirement for regular physical maintenance checks on temporary traffic management schemes.

Intellitag was installed on a seven-month scheme on the A1 at Biggleswade, which allowed Chevron TM to remotely monitor the scheme, carry out checks only when alerts were raised by the technology and ultimately eliminate the routine 2-hourly maintenance checks.

“The impact of Intellitag on this scheme has been phenomenal,” explains Stephanie Berwick, Head of Sustainability at the Chevron Group. “In this one scheme alone, we removed 107,800 miles which would have been required to undertake physical site maintenance checks, delivering a carbon saving in excess of 84 tonnes.”

Intellitag® is a simple, digital device which creates safer, greener and more efficient workzones. It attaches to temporary traffic management signs or equipment and plots them on a digital map where they can be viewed and monitored. It provides digital updates of the status of work sites and sends instant alerts if a sign has fallen or been moved at which point, traffic management operators can send a maintenance team to assess and reinstate the affected sign.

“We are really impressed with Intellitag and believe that this product could be a game- changer for the traffic management industry to reduce carbon emissions,” adds Stephanie. “Achieving net zero goes beyond our own operations. Our commitment to sustainability extends across the entire value chain, ensuring that our projects have a positive impact on the environment. We actively collaborate with partners, suppliers, and stakeholders to reduce the carbon footprint of our projects and products. We are already working with HRS to roll out Intellitag on other projects to deliver further carbon savings for Chevron TM and the wider industry.”

The silver Green Apple Award was presented to Stephanie Berwick and Stuart Abram, Chevron Group Bid Director, at a prestigious ceremony in the Houses of Parliament.
